AEOLIAN RIDE
MELBOURNE MAGIC!!
WELCOME TO OZ

MIGHTY
MELBOURNE!

03.11.06 AUSTRALIA had an awesome ride with all sorts of riders: lovers, racers, commuters, bike politicians and don't forget Very Impressive.

AEOLIAN MELBOURNE CHAMPIONS

Meet Chris and Steve. We met on the internet. No, seriously - we did. Chris got wind of the ride and invited me come down and put some Australian wind in the suits.

  TEST THAT WIND
Kudos to these volunteers who nearly had their heads lopped off by the 16 mile an hour off shore winds that pulled against us during the test ride.

  ROUTE CHECK!
Chris did an excellent job setting up the Melbourne route - especially with the Commonwealth games being hosted there at the same time.

We worried about that wind and set up a back up route so our riders wouldn't get whiplash :) turned out the wind was just fine that day.

  SHOWING UP!
We started out at Station Pier near Beacon Cove Food Store. Getting ready to blow up!

LEAP FORWARD!
This guy flying through the air is Damon. He made the Travel Smart map for Melbourne which combines bike paths, public transport and pedestrian paths. Good on ya Damon!

He hands them out along with bike tips and other flyers so often his friend made him those shorts with special long flyer pockets.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO FLY IN MY BEAUTIFUL BALLOON?
The suits fill up nicely with breeze or a sprint - I never really planned this part - but it works nicely to get the riders pumped up - naturally.

  SWEET CHEEKS
These love birds were super cute together. They both got naked the next day for the first Naked Bike ride in Melbourne.

  STRAPPING IN
Note: its required by law to wear a helmet in Melbourne. They are serious about safety. they have so many bike lanes and a place for you to stop in front of traffic at the light so they see you.

  HELP WITH THE HOOD
Its always nice to get a little help.

  BRIGHTNESS!
A reminder to all who ride in the sun - especially with white reflective suits on. Wear lots of sunscreen :)

  WHO IS WHO?
Sometimes its hard to tell from the front too.

ITS EASY TO GET LOST

In the yards of fabric!

  WATCH OUT CHARLIES ANGELS!
We've got a new kind of wings!

  REMEMBER VERY IMPRESSIVE?
This is his bike.

  AND THIS IS VERY IMPRESSIVE
He told me he wanted to add a little color to the ride and he did a very good job of it.

HONK HONK!

When all the Aeolians in white were whooping up a storm you could hear the little yellow goose honking right along.

COME 'N' GIVE A BUNNY A HUG!
They are fluffy and puffy.

  PREMATURE PUFFULATION!
I know I know - its hard not to get excited :)

  WHAT IS FUNNY
is that we look sillier when we are at rest than in action. Like a bunch of caspers.

  SERIOUSLY
This is the most serious part of the ride. The safety talk. I know - normally your parents would be the ones to give it to you - but I assure you - I am highly qualified. It is very hard to be serious when you are wearing a balloon.

TEAM MELBOURNE
Here they are. The bold and the beautiful. The lovers of bikes and puffy things. You guys were super. I love you.

  WHOOP AND ROLL
I have to apologize to LA, SF, and Cape Town. Some how, amidst all the chaos of setting up I forgot to introduce you to 1 special aeolian ingredient. Its the aeolian whoop. The first ride in NYC had it and I just remembered it on the Melbourne ride. I have to say the audio portion of the ride definitely changes the experience - in a bird/cheerleading sort of way. I promise if I come to your town again we will whoop it up!

PARK YOUR CAR
Get on a bike!

  PORT MELBOURNE!
Here is physical proof - we were definitely in Melbourne - - - or I put that sign in Cape Town. Just kidding. I must admit, there were some definite similarities between Cape Town. and Melbourne, climate wise and even the way the city planning is. Melbourne, however, has more bike lanes.

  BEACH GOERS BEWARE!
Here is where the whooping had a fun effect - instead of sleeping on the beach these people got a wake up call from the inflated bike ride whoops!.

for you to see my favorite reaction to the ride yet. See below.

LITTLE MAN'S MIND IS BLOWN!

That makes my day.

THE BUBBLE
The bubble was the first shape I prototyped. It took a while to get it so that it would inflate perfectly without floppy bits.

  THE BUNNY
The bunny is the most requested suit by riders by far. This one took several tries in the design process to get it to puff perfect.

  THE DROP
The drop was designed off the bubble shape and is a bit like a big dollop of whipped cream.

DOES THIS SUIT MAKE ME LOOK FAT?
It does? Good :)

Rejuvenated by our break we charged forward.

FLAPPY!
That crosswind will getcha.

  NOT SO FLAPPY!
A little power on our pedals and the puff is up.

WHO NEEDS CARTOONS?
When you can be one?

  WINDY WIND
This path was quite narrow so we took it single file by foot. Even walking we got a little puff.

  UP AND OVER
Dallas followed us in his car taking pictures. I can't figure out how he drove and shot at the same time. He's like the Lone Ranger.

OUR FEARLESS LEADER
Chris Star led the way armed with with her 2-way, her whistle and her camera. Another suitless rider, Euan, helped her lead without a suit - as it is difficult to see behind your head with a big bunny ear floating behind you.

COMING TO THE END AT THE BELGIAN BEER CAFE
The security guards hadn't been informed about our ride and wouldn't let us ride in through the way we had planned and told us "You can come in but you got to take those things off." I thought that was kind of funny. We politely complied and we went in and relaxed.

  BEER GARDEN
The Belgian Beer Cafe has an outdoor area the size of a football field - they also have their own bike team. Here Steve Rob and Euan enjoy some brew and snacks.

LOOK FIERCE FOR THE CAMERA BABY
I am sure that is what Suzie said when she took this picture.

  LOUNGE ACT
These guys were good.

  VERY IMPRESSIVE'S HEAD
Is also very impressive. On the other side of his head it says "FORCE IS THE WEAPON OF THE WEAK" Don't ya love him? :)

LONG WAY FROM HOME

These two on the right came all the way from Sydney to join the us for the ride!!

  COSTUMES GALORE
This furry fella rode along inside this gents backpack for a 1920's themed party after the ride. It would be a rather sad fate, I think, to have a clip inserted in the mouth of your corpse so that you can spend the rest of your life biting your own ass. Well, at least you get to go to parties..

MELBOURNE RIDERS UNSUITED & SEATED
Here they are - the Melbourne riders. Let's give 'em a hand folks they did great! Not one of them got hit by a car or hit a car themselves. They whooped like nobody's business and they were all very nice. Thank you Melbourne!
